Ballet dancing on the edge, other B.C. arts groups dig in

Arts groups in British Columbia remain cautiously optimistic about their own futures after watching Ballet BC lay off its entire company.

The layoffs announced at the Vancouver-based dance company on Tuesday are being blamed on the economic downturn.

While Ballet BC's artistic director said the company's future is in serious doubt, other arts groups in the province say they're not feeling the downturn yet, but know they must be cautious when companies and individuals have less money to spend.

Howard Jang, executive director of the Arts Club Theatre Company, told CBC News that ticket sales for holiday season productions are strong, but he's worried about post-Christmas interest in the arts.
